Lourdes Escarilla Abejuro passed away peacefully on April 14, 2020 at home, from complications of heart failure after several months of illness. “Ludy,” as she was known by family and friends, was 85 years old.
Our deep sadness for her loss is tinged with a slight shade of joy. Though physically suffering in her final days, she expressed bright eyed excitement that she was soon to be reunited with her beloved husband, the late Romeo Abejuro, M.D. who passed away in 2018. Her happy attitude brought gentle amusement to most; to us it brought peace to know they are together again and separable no more.
Ludy was born in Tabaco, Philippines on February 17, 1935. She was one of three children of the late David Fuentebella Escarilla and Manuela Ribaya Escarilla. She is predeceased by her brother, Fernando Fuentebella Escarilla and twin sister, Lydia Fuentebella Escarilla.
She attended St. Agnes Academy Dormitory from first grade to high school in Legaspi, Philippines and graduated in 1954. She was a well-known pianist during high school who often accompanied contestants during the Bicol Association of Catholic Schools (BACS) meets. In 1958 she graduated from St. Theresa College in Manila with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
In high school as though in a movie, while sitting in the stadium bleachers her eyes locked with those of the handsome Basketball team captain, Romeo, and it was then that her life of longtime love with him began. It would endure for about 60 years.
Ludy and Romeo married in October 3, 1959. Ludy was thriving as a successful accountant and manager at the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) in Manila, but without hesitation left her career when Romeo was offered a position in Frankfort Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States.
She was with the love of her life, so she never looked back, no matter the circumstances. Ludy struggled with many challenges raising four children in what was then a very foreign country to her at the time. After periods of time living in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida, and South Carolina, the family eventually settled in Michigan where they enjoyed many happy years as the children grew up.
In 2005, Ludy started a new chapter with Romeo in Peoria, Arizona where they moved when Romeo retired. They relished the proximity of their daughter Susan and family and son Noy, and regular visits from their sons Gerry and Ron and respective spouses and family.
Ludy lived a full life with the love of her dear husband, children and grandchildren and extended family and friends. She was very much loved by all and will be greatly missed.
Ludy is survived by her three sons and daughter: "Noy" Romeo, Jr., Gerald, Ronald, and Susan; her daughters-in-law and son-in-law: Kayann, Cynthia and Glenn; her 5 grandchildren: Brandon, Helen, Sydney, Lauren, Caedyn; and many nieces and nephews.
Out of respect and concern for public health and safety, the family has scheduled a Celebration of Life on Sunday, August 16, 2020 at 3:00pm at Sunland Mortuary, 15826 N. Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, AZ 85351. To send condolences to the family please visit www.SunlandMemorial.com.
