LUDMILLE R. (SZYMANSKI) POPOVICH, passed away October 31, 2010. Widow of Deacon Gabriel J. Popovich, was born September 9, 1914. She graduated from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and earned her Master’s degree from Columbia University School of Social Work in New York City. She taught 5th grade at St. John Kanty’s and sociology at Marquette University in Milwaukee. She taught psychiatric social work at Loyola University School of Social Work in Chicago, and was the Executive Director of Loyola’s social work extension in Milwaukee, and taught sociology at the University of Dayton. She was supervisor of social work at Catholic Welfare Guild, Wilmington, Delaware, and at Children’s Psychiatric Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. She was the only female Welfare Executive at Peoria State Hospital, Peoria, Illinois. Following retirement to Sun City, Arizona, she attended St. Elizabeth Seton Parish, where she was a member of the St. Elizabeth Seton Society, conducted Bible studies, and was on the Parish Council. She also taught English literacy at Dysart School in Surprise, Arizona. She is survived by her son, David (Mindy) of Manning, South Carolina, daughter Mary of Phoenix, granddaughter Elizabeth (Chad) Dietrich of Columbia, South Carolina, foster daughter Judy Hummer of Picacho Peak, Arizona, nieces and nephews, and seven godchildren.: Fred Syman, Gaye Andersen, Mary Carias, Patricia Gebhart, Debbie Toth, Marie Sholts, and Jennifer Williams. Visitation will be held at Sun City’s Sunland Mortuary from 5 to 7 p.m.Thursday, followed by the Great Parastas Service. Vistitation will also be held from 8 to 10 a.m.Friday, at St. Stephen Byzantine Catholic Cathedral in Phoenix, followed by the Office of Christian Burial.
