Maria Teresa (Garcia) Johnson was born on August 11, 1950, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and passed away on July 2, 2026, in Surprise, Arizona, at the age of 75. Maria Teresa met her husband, Harold Johnson, through the mail while she was attending UTEP in El Paso and he was serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Before they had even seen a picture of one another, they fell in love solely through the letters they shared. Maria Teresa and Harold were married on October 30, 1970. Together, they shared 56 happy years of marriage and raised two sons whom she loved dearly while living in Houston, Texas, and later in Vista, California. In retirement they moved to El Paso, Texas to be with Maria’s parents. She later relocated with her husband to Surprise, Arizona. Professionally, Maria worked in Human Resources within the golf and education industries. In her free time she loved cooking Mexican food, swapping recipes, traveling, and enjoying the company of others. All who met Maria Teresa knew her as someone who was kind to everyone, possessing a gentle spirit. She was also deeply thoughtful, always putting the needs of others before her own. There is a special place in heaven for someone as remarkable as Maria Teresa.
Maria was preceded in death by her mother, Emilia, and her father, Robert. She is survived by her husband, Harold; her two sons, Robert and Daniel; her sisters, Patricia, Katherine, Kathleen, Christina, and Roberta; and her two brothers, Arnold and Ruben.
