

Mark Edwin Swenson, 74, died of complications of pneumonia on October 13, 2021 at home. He was born July 2, 1947 in Sioux City, IA, the son of Harold and Bernice (Peterson) Swenson. Mark graduated from West High School (Madison, WI) in 1965 and graduated from Waldorf College (Forest City, IA) in 1967. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army from 1967-1969, serving 14 months in the Vietnam War.
After returning to Sioux City from his time with the Army, Mark was involved with the Sioux City Community Theatre. This was where he met his wife, Lois, and their courtship was spent actively involved with the theatre. Mark and Lois were married November 27, 1971 and would have celebrated 50 years married this year.
Mark enjoyed singing at church and was part of a choral group in the Siouxland area. He loved to sing whenever given the opportunity, was an avid reader, and was also active in bowling and golfing. Mark was last employed at Gateway Engineering in 2003 before suffering a brainstem stroke when he was unable to work again.
In addition to his parents, Mark was predeceased by his son, Michael. Mark is survived by his wife, Lois, his daughter, Jennifer Butler (with husband, Brett), two grandchildren, Caleb Gullings and Raema Butler; two brothers, Oren Swenson (with wife, Sue) and Paul Swenson (with wife, Sue) and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, where burial took place.
