Marta Lidia Villalobos

This is to honor and pay very special homage to our dear Marta Lidia Bermúdez “Martita”, who was born on December 5, 1943, the daughter of Ana Cristina Rosales and Roberto Antonio Bermúdez. She was born and raised in Guatemala City. The most significant experiences in her youth took place in a humble neighborhood where she lived surrounded by good people with whom, despite the passage of time and distance, and as true friends do, she always kept in touch and cultivated sincere friendships that have lasted to this day.

She attended a catholic school, the Casa Central, where she obtained a solid academic education and the degree of Primary School Teacher. But even more important was the religious education she received there; the nuns (Sisters of Christian Charity) strengthened her faith in God and her sense of solidarity towards others, friends and strangers alike. This solidarity was like an ever-shining light, and everyone who knew her witnessed and received her support, her empathy, and her open arms, which she extended without ever expecting anything in return. She was an extraordinary mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, friend, wife, and aunt, always ready to share and help.

The memory of when she got her first teaching job comes to my mind. It was at a rehabilitation center for orphaned and sick children in Guatemala City. I mention this passage from her life as just one example of the many ways in which she lived the true spirit of constant service towards others.

She lived the second part of her life in the United States of America (Los Angeles, Chicago, and Peoria). She lovingly and responsibly dedicated herself to raising, educating, and protecting her three children, Nancy, Ruben, and Douglas, who to this day are good, strong, and responsible people. All of us uncles are very proud to see that the effort, perseverance, and love that Marta invested have yielded excellent results and that she accomplished her mission.

Throughout life’s hectic times and the years that fly by, she always confided in me her eternal and unconditional love for the place where she was born: Guatemala. In some of our last conversations she told me of her nostalgia and wish to walk along the avenues of the historic center of Guatemala City, the streets of the old neighborhood where she grew up, and most of all the cobblestone streets of Antigua Guatemala. Not to mention the times she excitedly recalled the trips we took together to the Santa Teresita thermal spa.

Her life was not an easy one, but she always maintained her faith and hope. She never gave up and was a gift to those of us who had the blessing of being a part of her life! We thank her for her existence and for everything she so selflessly gave. Marta, in the name of your children, your brothers, your family, and your friends, I give you all of our admiration, our love, and our thanks. This and so much more is what Marta Lidia Bermúdez meant to me. May she rest in glory.

In my name and in the name of my wife, my daughters, and my son-in-law, I want to thank you for the effort you made to call us to say goodbye on the day before your departure. We will never forget that farewell!

We will miss you the rest of our lives. You have left a void that no one else will ever fill. Until we meet again, Martita.

Elogio Fúnebre:

A manera muy especial de honrar y homenajear a nuestra querida Marta Lidia Bermúdez “Martita”, quien nació el 5 de diciembre de 1943, hija de Ana Cristina Rosales y Roberto Antonio Bermúdez. Nació, creció, y se formó en la Ciudad de Guatemala. Sus mayores vivencias juveniles fueron en un vecindario humilde rodeada de personas buenas con las cuales, a pesar de los años y la distancia, como auténticos amigos, siempre mantuvo y cultivó amistades sinceras que han perdurado hasta el día de hoy.

Se educó en un colegio católico, la Casa Central, en donde obtuvo una sólida formación académica, graduándose de Maestra de Educación Primaria. Pero más importante aún fue su formación religiosa, pues las monjas (Hermanas de la Caridad Cristiana) fortalecieron su fe en Dios y su solidaridad con el prójimo, solidaridad con propios y extraños como una luz que nunca se apagó, pues todos los que tuvimos la experiencia de convivir con ella vimos y recibimos su apoyo, su empatía, y sus brazos abiertos sin esperar absolutamente nada a cambio. Fue un ser extraordinario como madre, hermana, hija, abuela, amiga, esposa, y tía, siempre atenta y dispuesta a compartir y ayudar.

Viene a mi memoria cuando obtuvo su primer trabajo como maestra. Fue en un centro de rehabilitación para niños huérfanos y enfermos en la Ciudad de Guatemala. Menciono este pasaje de su vida como una de tantas muestras de incansable labor de servicio, es decir, siempre con espíritu de entrega a los demás.

La segunda parte de su vida la desarrolló en los Estados Unidos de América (Los Ángeles, Chicago, y Peoria). De manera muy responsable y amorosa se dedicó a criar, educar, y proteger a sus tres hijos, Nancy, Ruben, y Douglas, quienes hasta la fecha son personas de bien, educadas, y muy responsables. Todos los tíos nos sentimos muy orgullosos de ver que el esfuerzo, la perseverancia, y el amor de madre tuvieron un excelente resultado y que Marta cumplió con su misión.

Entre las carreras de la vida y los años que se pasan volando, ella siempre me hizo confidente de su eterno e incondicional cariño por el lugar que la vio nacer: Guatemala. Dentro de las últimas pláticas me confirmaba su nostalgia por recorrer las avenidas del centro histórico de la capital, las calles de aquel viejo vecindario que la vio crecer, pero sobre todo las calles empedradas de la Antigua Guatemala, sin dejar de mencionar las veces que se emocionaba platicando de cuando disfrutábamos juntos las idas al balneario de Santa Teresita.

Su vida no fue nada fácil, siempre cuesta arriba, pero siempre sin perder la fe y la esperanza. Nunca se dio por vencida y fue un regalo para todas las personas que tuvimos la bendición de ser parte de su vida! Le decimos gracias por existir y gracias por haberlo dado todo. Marta, en nombre de tus hijos, de tus hermanos, de tu familia, y de tus amigos, te entrego toda nuestra admiración y todo nuestro cariño y agradecimiento. Esto y mucho más fue Marta Lidia Bermudez, que en gloria esté.

En nombre mio y de mi esposa, mis hijas, y mi yerno te doy gracias por haber hecho el esfuerzo de llamarnos para despedirte de nosotros un día antes de tu partida. Nunca olvidaremos ese adios!

Te extrañaremos el resto de nuestra existencia. Dejas vacío un espacio que nadie ocupará. Hasta pronto, Martita.
