Melvin was born in Mercer County, Illinois, the son of William and Elsie Carlson Larson. He married the former Helen Laughead Davis on April 9, 1966, in Aledo, IL. He received his education from Henry and Mercer County Schools and graduated from Winola High School, Viola, IL. He received his B.A. degree in education from Augustana College, Rock Island, IL and his M.A. degree in education from the University of Illinois. After teaching for several years, he served two years in the Army during the Korean conflict. He returned to teaching and administration ending his career of 35 years as Principal of Apollo Elementary School in Aledo, IL.
Mr. Larson also served as organist and choir director in various churches for 40 years. His love for music inspired him to purchase a 1926 Wurlitzer Theatre organ in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, dismantle it, transport it to Aledo, IL, and with the help of many friends installed it in his new home in Aledo which he had built in 1961 to accommodate the organ. He and his wife moved to Arizona in 1984 at which time he became organist and choir director for 10 years at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and a brother, Morris. Condolences may be offered to Melvin’s family by visiting www.sunlandmemorial.com.
