During Robert’s early years the family lived on a farm in Frankfort Ohio. They moved to the town of Madera Ohio for his primary years. At age thirteen the family then located to the Hyde Park area in Cincinnati, Ohio where he graduated from Withrow High School in 1938.
Robert worked for US Playing Card, Trail Mobile, and US Shoe Company before serving in the US Army. His service was from March 1943 until June 1946. During his service years he was in England, France, Belgium, the Nederlands, and Germany. He was with the 82nd Air borne division during the Battle of the Bulge. During his military service he received 2 bronze stars as a Rifle-Marksman; 2nd Class Gunner.
After serving his country Robert went to work for the Erie Lackawana Railroad. During this time he met and married Shirley Haslinger on June 16th, 1951 in Cincinnati, Ohio. After the wedding the job relocated Robert and Shirley to Iowa where they raised four daughters. In 1980 Robert retired from his full time job and entered into the real estate industry. He worked with Inman Realty in West Des Moines for 5 years before he decided to fully retire.
In 1985 Robert made the move to sunny Sun City West, Arizona. He enjoyed the weather as he was an avid golfer, tennis player, and swimmer. He was a regular at the RH Johnson facility where he swam his laps. He enjoyed traveling, especially cruises, all over the world. He was a member of Desert Palms Presbyterian Church of Sun City West as well.
Robert is predeceased by his wife, Shirley and daughter, Janet Modeen. He is survived by three daughters and their families; Sally Hamill (Patrick) of Sun City West, AZ; Patti Hansen (Richard) of Ames, Ia; Cory Huskins (Scott) of Silver Creek, GA; 11 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
