Roy was born on April 9, 1929 to Walter and Margaretha Meyer in Bayonne, NJ. After graduating from high school in 1947, he went on to study accounting at Pace University in New York. He met his future wife, Dorothy, at a church youth group and they married in 1955. They began their life in Queens, New York with the birth of their son, Bruce. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Stony Point, NY where Susan was born and then to Sterling Forest, NY where Jane and Nancy were born.
Roy worked in various accounting jobs for a Rolls Royce dealership, NY Trap Rock Co., Standard Brands, Inc., and Philco International Corp. After the family moved to Cornwall, New York in 1970, Roy worked as the Controller for Ottaway Newspapers, Inc., a subsidiary of Dow Jones. After his retirement in 1988, Roy and Dorothy relocated to Sun City West, Arizona enjoying their retirement with newfound friends and hobbies.
Roy was most passionate about service to others and volunteered for various organizations including Benevilla and a local hospital. Over the years, he was very involved in his church where he served as an usher, a treasurer, and on various committees, including the Communion Committee.
He was interested in train sets from an early age and in his later years in Arizona, was a long-standing member of a bowling league. He enjoyed traveling with Dorothy as they made trips to Hawaii, St. Maarten, Jersey Shore, California, and in Arizona.
His four children are grateful for his never-ending love, support, inspiration, and guidance. He took pride in being organized and instilled that quality in his kids. He believed in having a positive outlook and faithfully sent bible verses, excerpts from devotionals, and affirmations. He was a wonderful example to his family and friends of living a faith-based life, and being committed to doing things “the right way” no matter how difficult it might be. His life was an example of generosity and kindness …the kind of life we each strive to have.
We are grateful for the love and support from friends, family, caregivers and staff at Vista Winds Assisted Living and Aspen Hospice.
Roy was predeceased by his wife Dorothy and grandson Daniel. He is survived by his four children, Bruce (Helen), Susan (Mark), Jane, and Nancy (Primo), six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at 9:00 am, Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City, AZ, with a graveside service to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Benevilla in Surprise, Arizona.
