Dr. William A.P. Meyer died Friday January 11, 2013 at the Royal Oaks Health Care Center in Sun City, Az. Born June 20th of 1923 in Germany he immigrated to the United States with his parents and sisters in 1926, settling in Shelton, Ct. Upon graduation from high school, Dr. Meyer attended Yale University earning a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1944 he joined the U.S. Navy, serving until the end of WWII as a Lieutenant. During the Korean War he was recalled to active duty in the Navy and served until the end of that conflict.
He returned to his academic pursuits at Yale following the war and gained an MS. Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed briefly with Standard Oil of Indiana but spent the rest of his working career with Gulf Oil Corp. At Gulf Oil he spent many years in the research division in Pittsburgh, Pa. before moving to Houston as VP of Marketing for the Gulf Lube Oils Division. While working in research he also completed the requirements for his Doctorate degree from Yale in Mechanical Engineering. He retired in 1984 and with his wife Shirley relocated to Sun City , Az. In retirement he and Shirley were able to travel extensively, visit their children and grandchildren, and pursue their passion for golf.
Dr. Meyer was a member of Fountain of Life Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 62 in Peoria, the Yale University Alumni Assoc, and the Sun City Bandits men’s golf group. He will be remembered by his friends and family as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Shirley Bach Meyer, his sister Irmgaard Delallo of Huntington, Ct. , and his sister Anne Garrity of Lakeland, Fl.
He is survived by his daughters, Wendy Thill (Bob) of Olathe, Ks, and Sally Grimm (Don) of Hattiesburg, Ms., grandchildren Andrew Grimm of Allen Park, Mi., Abbey Schlesinger of Oro Valley, Az. , Sarah Kaczynski of Springfield, Mo and David Thill of Merriam, Ks., great grandchildren Evelyn and Autumn Kaczynski and Grayson Schlesinger.
Memorial services will be at Wednesday January 16th at 11:00 a.m. at the Fountain of Life Lutheran Church, 15630 Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, Az. A private interment will follow at the Sun Land Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at the William A.P. Meyer Memorial Fund.
