Bill was taken from us by cancer, but he gave one hell of a fight. Early on we were told to expect 6 weeks to 3 months, but Bill was with us for nearly 18 months. During this time he was an avid Jeopardy fan, and master Trivial Pursuit player.
Bill was the beloved husband to his wife Pat for 58 wonderful years, and a loving and cherished father to his children, Steve Paustian, John Paustian (Debi), Kim Shaffer (Rick), Kay Limborg (Richard), and Bill Paustian (Cheryl). His wife Pat, and son Steve preceded him in death.
Born in Newark, New Jersey to the late William and Dorothy Paustian, Bill was the oldest of two children. Bill is survived by his loving brother, Raymond Paustian of Safety Harbor, FL and sisters-in-law Joan Brannagan of Hastings, NE and Rose Mary Brannagan of Grand Island, NE.
His grandchildren, April Weiner, Tiffany Paustian, Shelby Paustian, Stephen Slater, Jared Slater, Steven Shaffer, Brian Limborg, Jessica Paredes, Thomas Limborg, Megan Focht and Julia Paustian, and his 8 great-grandchildren were blessed to have known him and will have a special place in their heart for him forever.
Bill met his loving wife Pat while home on leave to Nebraska from the Air Force. It was love at first sight, getting married and raising 5 children together. Bill became a successful sales executive with 3M and his job enabled them to live in new places and meet many new people. They lived in Omaha, Nebraska; Houston, Texas; Marietta, Georgia; Stillwater, Minnesota; Naperville, Illinois; and Sun City, Arizona. Near the end of his 35 year 3M career, Bill became an avid Ham Radio Operator. You could find Bill up late at night on the radio, talking to people all over the world, and on every car trip he became a “county hunter” for his fellow operators, willing to drive out of his way to get someone their next county.
After retirement they travelled extensively across the United States in their motor home full time for 8 years, including Alaska, before finally settling in Sun City, Arizona.
Bill was full of life and energy. He played volleyball at the RV park and often golfed 18-36 holes in a day. While in his 70’s Bill joined a bike club, making many treks across the valley and to the mountains, some 100+ mile trips. He played poker at the Men’s Club multiple times per week. He joined the Sun City Posse in February 2004, volunteering his service for 9 years. He patrolled the streets of Sun City, providing wellness checks on residences, vandalism checks for businesses, and supporting the Sheriff with traffic control during accidents. He received multiple service awards where he volunteered 2,200+ hours in the year. He was the first one on-site for a heart attack victim; he pulled him out of his car in 110+ degree heat and provided CPR until the EMTs could arrive, saving the man’s life. Bill was presented the Life Saving Medal from the Maricopa County Sheriff. During his time in the Posse, Bill started to ride with the Maricopa County Sheriffs. He developed a special partnership with Deputy Amie Duong, working with her for several years. Bill considered Amie and her children Robert and Alyssa a second family, and their friendship continued the rest of his life.
Bill remarried in 2014 and is survived by his second wife, Joan.
