A schoolteacher in Port Isaac, England, Winifred was living in Bodmin where she biked 14 miles each weekend to see her husband-to-be, Roman Ortals, who was stationed there with the U.S. Army. They were married on May 20th, 1944, and after WWII, traveled on the Queen Mary with other war brides to start their new journey as newlyweds in the U.S. together, they provided a loving and fun filled home. Shortly after retiring to Sun City, AZ, Roman preceded Winifred in death in 1980. Despite losing the love of her life, Winifred continued her zest for life, as those who knew her well came to expect. She loved hosting dinners with family & friends, while telling stories and sharing memories of growing up in England.
Her passion for traveling, led her back to her homeland, as well as other European destinations, and Australia. She enjoyed taking cruises with Tahiti and Alaska being two of her favorite destinations. Along with traveling, spending time at the casino and playing bingo (where she won often and never missed the opportunity) was a hobby she always looked forward to. Other interests included watching the “Suns” and “D-Backs”. One hundred years of life offers many occasions to influence people. Those who knew Winifred are all better for having known her. Besides Roman, preceding Winifred in death were her two sons, Lawrence (2017) and David Ortals (1970), her son-in-law, John (Jack) Mulville (2016), her grandson, Patrick Mulville (2022), her brother, Philip Hodge (1995) of St. Austell, England, and of course her parents, and father and mothers-in-law, Joseph and Rose “Olive” (Evers) Ortals.
Surviving is her son, John Ortals, her daughter, Marilyn Mulville, and her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.sunlandmemorial.com for the Ortals family.
