Barbara grew up in Los Angeles, California, and attended schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District. She was a student at Washington High School and later continued on to college, carrying forward a quiet wisdom and a lifelong steadiness that would shape the way she approached both work and family life.
She built a long and dedicated career with Pacific Bell and Verizon, serving with loyalty and care until her retirement in 2002. Those who knew Barbara understood that she brought the same conscientious spirit to her work that she brought to her relationships—selfless, dependable, and guided by a sincere desire to do what was right.
In 1967, Barbara married Brent Hughes Sr. Together they built a family grounded in love and devotion. She was the mother of a daughter, Melony, and two sons, Brent Jr and Jason. Barbara’s kind-hearted nature was most evident in the way she nurtured her family, and in the warmth she extended to friends, neighbors, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. She especially loved her grandkids and great-grandkids, holding them close with a compassionate heart and a wise, steady presence.
Barbara found joy in making porcelain dolls, gardening, singing, and taking long drives—simple pleasures that reflected her gentle creativity and her appreciation for quiet beauty. Many will remember her ever-present smile, her wit, charisma, charm, and her lovely voice—gifts she shared naturally, without pretense, and always with thoughtfulness.
A devoted member of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Barbara placed Jehovah first in her life and in everything she did. She often said, before planning something, “Jehovah Willing,” a phrase that reflected not only her faith, but the faithful sincerity with which she approached each day. This was who she was—steadfast, loyal, and guided by conviction.
Barbara lived in Surprise, Arizona. Her legacy is one of compassion, devotion, and quiet strength—an example of a life lived with kindness and purpose. She will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered.
