Bernice Paul Hurlbut, 85, of Glendale, AZ, passed peacefully with her family by her side on February 4, 2013. She was born on October 23, 1927, in Chicago, IL, to Matthias I. and Bernice (Norkus) Paul. Bernice married Phillip Robert Hurlbut on February 1, 1947 and they spent most of their 43 years together in the Arizona desert. They were among the first members of a branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cave Creek, AZ, where they provided many years of devoted service. Bernice assisted her husband throughout their marriage as field engineer, bookkeeper and secretary. She also went on to work as Maricopa County Branch Librarian in Cave Creek, followed by becoming a data entry clerk that evolved into 29 years as an executive assistant for a local developer. But her greatest joy was at home. She recently reported, “I enjoyed more than anything serving my family. It was the greatest honor.” She loved music, crafts, and art and passed on that love to her children. Bernice is preceded in death by her beloved husband and her sister Helen. She is survived by her sister Jane Heidke, and five children: Barry Alan, Gretchen Yvonne, Phillip Robert Jr., Jesse David, and Jonathan Scott, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be at 11 A.M., Monday, February 11, 2013, at the LDS North Canyon Ward, 3527 W. Happy Valley Rd., Glendale, AZ. Interment at Cave Creek Cemetery.
