MCCULLOUGH, Beverly Andress Jr., "Sonny,” 75, of Sun City West, Arizona, departed this life peacefully on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at his home in Corte Bella Country Club Estates, with his family and friends by his side. “Sonny,” as he was affectionately known, was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on January 19, 1944 to Beverly A. McCullough, Sr., and Portia F. Johnson McCullough, who preceded him in death.
Sonny had an illustrious football career at Jackson P. Burley High School in Charlottesville, Virginia. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he completed additional training and college classes. Subsequently, Sonny retired from Law Enforcement and Corrections. Sonny remained an active member of the Jackson P. Burley Alumni Association, St. Paul College Alumni Association, and the Ruthville Rod and Gun Club. Additionally, he was a Jazz aficionado, who possessed an impressive collection. Sonny studied astronomy, archaeology, the indigenous peoples, and religious history. He had an insatiable thirst for the Word of God which led him to embark on a daily routine of study.
A True man of God, Sonny was passionate about his walk with Christ, he loved his wife, L’Retta, who was the pride and joy of his life. As such, he was a doting husband and a faithful member of Antioch Church of God in Christ, Dr. Jonathan E. Logan (Sr. Pastor) and Lady Christine Logan (First Lady). Accordingly, he often stated, “I love my pastor Dr. Logan and my beautiful First Lady, Missionary Logan!” Dr. Logan described Sonny as “A Man among Men.” Sonny was without question an extraordinary man and a “people person” who valued people over things. One of the doctors at Mayo Clinic Hospital described him with one word, “impactful.” For Sonny not only shared the Gospel with everyone who was in his presence, he also shared very valuable Biblical principles with the young men he mentored. Before Sonny transitioned from this life, he requested that his accomplishments and awards not be listed. He often said with profundity, “Only what’s done for Christ will last.”
Sonny is survived by his loving and devoted wife, L'Retta Wooldridge McCullough; loving daughters, Diane Henderson of Largo, Maryland, and Kimberly McCullough of Kernesville, North Carolina; step-daughter, Sheri Mehti of Largo, Maryland; cherished grandchildren, Tyler Henderson, Zoya McCullough, and Olivia Ratcliffe; devoted brother, Tiffany A.
