Helen was born July 26, 1923, to Royce J. and Ethel R. (Pilcher) Patterson, in Longmont, CO. She attended Longmont High School, Class of 1941. With a full-ride scholarship, she went on to attend Parks School of Business in Denver, CO. Upon graduation she began her career with the Boulder County Assessor’s Office.
In December,1944, Helen married Dale Clifford Voake, of Longmont, CO. She quit her job with Boulder County, and together they were owner operators of a medium sized turkey farm and later a subcontracting business. Raising more than 5,000 turkeys per year, farming the land and managing the subcontracting company, all the while raising a family of three daughters, Marian E. (Voake) Walker, deceased; Carol (Voake) Chase, Surprise, AZ, and Rhonda L. (Voake) Jones, Tucson, AZ, kept Helen and Dale extremely busy. However, when times on the farm became lean, Helen went to work in the Boulder County Treasurer’s Office and eventually retired as Boulder County deputy treasurer in 1984.
In February 1975 Dale passed away suddenly of a heart attack leaving Helen to complete a house under construction. Helen, in her naturally calm demeanor, handled the challenges in the professional manner that she always presented.
Robert (Bob) E. Wilson came into Helen’s life in 1984. They were wed December 23, 1984, in Longmont, CO. Bob asked Helen what she wanted most to do. She replied, “well, I would like to see some of the world”. That they did, over the next 25 years they traveled to 34 countries. When not “seeing the world” they each had their hobbies; Helen became an extremely accomplished china painter. Together they have a combined family of 7 children, 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Helen and Bob moved from Longmont to Surprise, AZ, in December 2016 so Helen could be near her daughters. She is preceded in death by Dale C. Voake (1975), Marian Walker (2018), and Robert E. Wilson (2021).
Helen lived a wonderful life of 99 years 7 months, full of life experiences and adventures. Her contagious smile and good cheer will be missed by her family and all who knew her.
