Irene was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 8th, 1941 to James and Margaret (McCaffery) McElligott. Irene grew up in a very close Irish Catholic family and was blessed with the ability to communicate with everyone in a manner that made them feel as if she knew them a lifetime. Irene was an avid traveler who appreciated the different cultures she experienced on her various trips throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and the United States. She also enjoyed genealogy, baking her popular chocolate eclairs and watching sporting events with her son.
On a night out with her sisters and friends, Irene met the love of her life Anthony Julian Marro who she soon married thereafter in October 1970. A few years later, she gave birth to their son Anthony. Some of Irene’s strongest qualities were demonstrated when helping others and persevering through challenging situations. This was evident when caring for her husband Anthony who was diagnosed with a debilitating neurological disease shortly after they were married. Despite these challenges, Irene worked several years at the US Postal Service and was able to support the family through her retirement in 2003 and for years thereafter.
In addition to her parents, Irene was predeceased by her husband Anthony who passed away in 2014, her sisters Mary and Kathleen, and her brothers Tom and John. She is survived by her son Anthony, her brother James, her sisters Carol and Margaret as well as numerous nieces, nephews and her two best life-long friends, Celeste and Dorothy.
