JD lived a life marked by steadfast devotion, quiet resilience, and a selfless kind of love that showed itself most clearly in how he worked, how he served, and how he cared for others. Amazing in both skill and spirit, he met life with determination and a hard-working resolve that never sought attention, yet left a lasting imprint on those who knew him.
JD attended El Monte High School and Saddle Back Junior College, building a foundation that would carry into a life defined by capability, grit, and perseverance.
Over the years, JD wore many hats and wore them well. He was an entrepreneur, served in Army Search and Rescue, and flew in a Huey Helicopter—work that called for steadiness under pressure and a resilient heart. He also worked as a general contractor, horse trainer, bull rider, and carpenter. In every role, JD’s devoted nature and strong work ethic were evident, and his love was often expressed through what he built, repaired, and made with his own hands.
JD found deep joy in horse training, bull riding, and wood working. He could often be found tinkering around the garage and house, creating specialty boxes, bird houses, and furniture—the list goes on and on. These were not simply hobbies, but reflections of a life spent doing for others, giving time and effort freely, and finding purpose in the simple dignity of honest work.
In 1986, JD accepted Jesus into his life, a commitment that shaped the years that followed. He was involved with Calvary Chapel Pacific Coast and Men’s Bible Studies, living out a faith that was steady and sincere. His love for the Lord remained central, alongside his loving devotion to family and the friendships he treasured.
JD is survived by his wife, Susie Smith, of 53 years, and his daughter, Lisa Smith, as well as many nephews and nieces who were loved dearly.
JD was preceded in death by parents Herman and Betty Smith, sister, Barbara Smith, and Brother Jim Smith.
He also held close his best friends George Frost, Pat Doyle, and Sonny Goulet—friendships that spoke to the loyal and loving way JD walked through life.
Thank you to everyone for your love, support and care. It will never be forgotten.
“I miss you already, JD
