DIETRICH, Manford Clayton, age 82, of Sunnyside, WA. passed away on April, 2024. Manford was born to Marie and George Dietrich in Richland, WA. on January 28, 1942, and moved with his family to Outlook, WA. when they were displaced due the Manhattan Project in 1943. He enjoyed growing up "out in the country" where he learned a lot about farming and an appreciation of the land and the seasons. After attending Outlook grade school, he transferred to Sunnyside High School where he met his sweetheart, Monica White. They were married on April 18, 1961 in Coeur d'Alene, ID. Manford enlisted in the Navy in 1961, where he served for 4 years on the U.S.S. Midway stationed in Alameida, CA. and served three tours in the south Pacific. After their time in the service, Manford and Monica settled back in Sunnyside, where they raised their family and began their working careers. Before becoming an entrepreneur, Manford worked as an oil truck driver, a milkman, a police officer, and the manager of Bob's Drive-Inn, which lead to his restaurant journey and subsequent purchase of the A&W in Sunnyside in 1969. They later added the Grandview location. They especially enjoyed working side by side with high school students, but employed hard working people of all ages. Manford and Monica instilled a strong work ethic in all who had the honor of working with them. They enjoyed sponsoring Little League teams and helping the community anytime they could. They retired from the restaurant business in 1991. Never one to retire completely, as an entrepreneur, he was always seeking new business opportunities. While their kids were in school, they followed them around and cheered them on, whether it was basketball, football, or cheerleading. He was always proud of his kids and grandkids. Manford enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, visiting with lifelong friends, and making new friends. He also had a strong love and belief in his country. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and partner of 63 years, Monica; son Dion; son Darin and his wife Jen (Frenzel); daughter Dacia and her husband David (From) and their two children Delaney and Devin; sister Delores Frink-Petri, a nephew and nieces. Manford was preceded in death by his grandson Dylan, and his parents. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gary Sinise Foundation to support injured and disabled veterans.
