Peggy was born on January 10, 1923 to Gertrude and Alphonso Whitehurst. Peggy grew up in Virginia and eventually relocated to New York where she met the love of her life, Elmer Phew. They married in 1949, and had two beautiful daughters, Pat and Sue. Peggy worked as a Certified Nurse's Assistant for many years and loved helping others. Peggy loved playing cards, going to the casino, listening to music and taking care of her family.
After retirement, Peggy moved to San Diego where she was very dedicated to her church family. She was known as the "Cake Lady" to the church. She loved to bake and make cakes for everyone for every occasion. She was well-known and loved by many.
When Peggy could no longer live by herself, she relocated to Arizona to be with her family. She enjoyed spending time listening to her gospel music and watching her favorite show, Family Feud. She always said "I am so blessed to have a family that loves me and takes care of me."
Peggy went home to be with The Lord on January 13, 2019, at the age of 96. She would always say, "I have lived a good life."
Peggy is preceded in death by her husband Elmer, parents Gertrude and Alphonso, sisters Vernice and Annie, and her brother Al.
She is survived by her daughters, Pat and her husband Harold, and Sue; grandchildren, Kyle, Celia, Tonya, Sylvester, Felicia, Jamal, Vince and Rhasan; great-grandchildren, Elias, Danesha, Bryce, MIchelle and Marissa; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of surrogate children whom she loved and cared for as her own.
Rest in Peace Mom and Grandma...We love you!
"Oh, When I Come to the End of My Journey,
If when you give
The best of your service,
Telling the world
That your Savior has come,
Be not dismayed
When men won't believe you.
He'll understand, oh yes, He will,
And say, oh yes, "Well done".
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 25, 2019 at 10:00 AM, at Kingdom in the Valley Christian Church, 11640 N. 19th Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona.
