Richard “Rich” Fowler, a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and faithful servant of the Lord, was called home to his eternal rest on August 7, 2025. He passed peacefully of natural causes at the age of 89 in Surprise, AZ, surrounded by the love of his family and the grace of his Savior.
Born on March 9, 1936, in San Francisco, CA, to Marion Hudson and Eugene Fowler, Rich grew up with a heart full of curiosity and a spirit of service, alongside his brother, Gene Fowler. He graduated from Madison West High School in Madison, WI, where he completed Navy ROTC, fostering his commitment to discipline and leadership. He later graduated from San Diego State University in San Diego, CA, where he furthered his education and prepared for a life of service. Rich served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959 and later in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, reflecting his deep patriotism and dedication to his country.
On March 22, 1964, Rich married the love of his life, Joyce Kay Martin, and together they built a life rooted in faith, family, and community. Rich began his teaching career at Mount Miguel High School in San Diego, CA, where he taught woodshop for one year. After moving to Napa Valley, CA, he found his true calling as an educator, serving as a beloved woodshop teacher at Silverado Middle School in the Napa Valley Unified School District for 31 years. His passion for teaching extended to driver’s training and mathematics, and his warmth and wisdom left an enduring impact on over 14,000 students. Rich was a successful middle school teacher because he related so well to his students, having struggled with school himself at that age. His ability to be just as silly as the kids brought joy and connection to his classroom, making him a favorite among students and colleagues alike. Many of his students remained in touch with him over the years, a testament to the lasting bonds he formed. Prior to his teaching career, during high school, Rich worked at a grocery store in Madison, WI, the Sunshine Biscuit Company in San Diego, CA, and the San Diego Recreation Department.
A man of steadfast faith, Rich was a proud member of First Baptist Church in San Diego, CA, Grace Church in Napa Valley, CA, and Happy Trails Christian Fellowship in Surprise, AZ. His love for the Lord was evident in his kind spirit, generous heart, and unwavering commitment to living a life that glorified God. Rich also greatly enjoyed the Ford V-8 Club and the Napa Valley Cruisers, where his passion for collecting and working on old cars brought him great delight.
Rich’s hobbies reflected his industrious and joyful nature. He loved riding on his tractor and mowing his four acres in Napa Valley, CA, RVing and camping with Joyce, playing pickleball, and tinkering with projects that showcased his creativity and skill. Above all, Rich treasured time spent with his family, leaving a legacy of love and faith that will endure for generations. He enjoyed giving away items that brought smiles—pedometers, walking lights, Exacto knives, flashlights, flag stars to honor veterans, and most recently, root beer barrels.
Rich was preceded in death by his siblings, Bobbie Culligan, Eugene Fowler, David Fowler, Carol Fowler, and Chris Fowler. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Joyce Fowler;his brother, Doug Fowler; his son, Stephen Fowler (married to Cindy), and their children, Stephani Cruz (married to Tony), Janessa Fowler, Haley Lynch, Casey Fowler, Cole Lynch, and Abbie Fowler; his daughter, Beth Strand (married to Scott), and their children, Kylie Grant (married to Brandon) and Torie Strand; and his great-grandchild, Haisley Grant. Each carries forward the love, laughter, and lessons Rich so generously shared.
