We are sad to announce that Alan passed away on Nov 5 2023 in Langley BC. He leaves behind to mourn, his brother Robert and family, sister Anne and family, extended family in England and Wales, and many many friends – in particular, his “Monday group”, who were steadfast and caring throughout his illness.
Alan graduated from Delta Secondary and then on to BCIT, graduating in the computer science field. His career in computers spanned 45 years of great innovation and change, and he thrived with the intellectual challenges of that innovation.
He lived in Tsawwassen for a number of years, but the sea called to him and he moved onto his boat, living onboard in Richmond and then in False Creek for 20 years. He found community at Spruce Harbour Marina.
He was an independent individual who lived his life his way. His quiet and soft-spoken manner hid his remarkable intelligence, an adventurous spirit and intense curiosity about the world. He had a passion for exploring hidden corners. Not for him the major tourist sites; he would be found on a dusty path in a small village in Africa, on a one lane mountainous road in northern Pakistan, backpacking the Chilkoot Trail, anchored in a quiet bay in northern BC .
Alan was a lifelong boater who loved the sea, but mountains were also special to him. He climbed the tallest mountains in three continents: Kilimanjaro (Africa), Elbrus (Europe), and Aconcagua (South America). He hiked to Everest base camp three times, he was a regular on the Grouse Grind, twice in a day. His annual weekend trips to Anvil Island in Howe Sound were legend. After retirement, his love of the outdoors continued and he spent many weekends with friends cycling and camping. He will be greatly missed, but he lived a full and rich life.
The family thanks the Village staff for their care, and also the caregivers of Just Like Family, most especially Emilio. His “Monday” friends provided a spark of joy in his last years, and we are grateful.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. For any who wish to attend, please reach out to family for the details. If you so wish, donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
