ATKINSON, Carol Elizabeth 1947-2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden peaceful passing of Carol Elizabeth Atkinson on October 31, 2012. Carol was born on November 10, 1947 in Guildford, Surrey, England. She came to Canada in 1972, starting out in Toronto, before moving out to Vancouver where she met her husband Gary. They married in 1975 and had three children, Russell and Daren born in 1976 and Sarah who was born in 1979.

Carol was an exceptional mother who loved her children deeply and spent many hours helping out at their schools. Her huge heart, loving nature and desire to help others were appreciated by everyone who knew her. Once the children were well settled she began working in the Managers Office of the City of Surrey where she remained for 20 years. For the last 15 years she was instrumental in the organization of the Mayor’s Gala. In recognition of her dedication and commitment to the Gala, and her ongoing and fierce support of the Surrey Firefighters and their charities, Carol was bestowed the privilege of an honorary firefighter.

Carol is deeply loved by her family and many friends. She is survived by her husband and children, who live in Surrey, Vancouver & New York and her sister Deirdre Carn, brother-in-law Ian Carn and nephew Marc Carn who live in England. She was predeceased by her mother and father Enid and Arthur Matthews.

Carol went to sleep on Halloween Eve shortly after handing out candy to neighborhood children and never woke up. Anyone who knew Carol loved her very deeply and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her; in fact there are many of us who have no idea how we will cope without her. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and/or the Surrey Firefighter’s Charitable Society would be greatly appreciated. A celebration of her life will take place at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Center at 14831 – 28 Ave., Surrey, B.C. on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 1:30 p.m.

Although we were not able to be at Carol's service I was grateful to be there online. I wish that I had enjoyed knowing Carol as long as many of the speakers, however, I am thankful that I got to know her in the last 6 years. Many snowbirds look forward to heading south for the sun and golf, but I looked forward to seeing Carol: she was brighter than the desert sun! We were golfing pals (much to Gary's chagrin as we talked as much as we golfed). I loved her.
