Daniel Peter Szabo - dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend - passed away in White Rock, on Saturday October 8, 2022 at the age of 81 years.
Dan was born to Desider and Elizabeth Szabo in Témiscaming, Québec on October 3, 1941, the second of five children. He graduated from St. Patrick's College High School in 1960 before attending Royal Roads Military College in Victoria, BC and Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario where he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He then started his military service as a navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force based in Trenton, Ontario.
Dan and Sylvia married on December 19, 1964 and soon after welcomed their first child, Daniel Jr. Upon his honourable discharge as Captain from the Air Force in 1967, Dan and his young family embarked on an exciting adventure to a new home across the country in Surrey, BC. He started work at BC Tel and the family grew to four with the birth of Gregory in 1969. Dan would make a final change in professions when he started with Weldwood of Canada and rose to director of pulp marketing in a remarkable 35 year career. Throughout his life Dan made fast friends and lasting friendships including his RMC classmates, work colleagues and customers.
Dan was a world traveler, a good hockey player, enjoyed golf, cooking and camping and trips with his Airstream trailer. A very proud grandfather, he especially loved visits with his grandchildren and taking in their many activities and celebrating their accomplishments with them.
Dan was preceded in death by his son Greg, his parents Desider and Elizabeth as well as his brother Jim. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, and his son, Dan and wife Pam and grandchildren Katie and Spencer, and his sisters Marlene and Christine and brother Ron. Dan was also a special uncle to his nieces and nephews.
In his memory, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of BC or Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to Dr. Derkach and the staff at the Evergreen Baptist Care Home in White Rock for their care and compassion.
A celebration of life will be held in the new year.
