Dad was born in County Kildare, Ireland on May 14, 1918, eldest son of William Quinn and Margaret Ryan. He was pre-deceased by his brothers, Tom and Seamus, his wife Joyce, daughter in law Donna, son in law Jean and first-born child and only son, Jim.
Dad grew up near Dublin where he completed his education at Carriglea School, graduating in 1934 to begin an apprenticeship as a tailor. He later moved on to work for Dublin United Tram.
Dad enlisted in the Irish Army serving, as a Sergeant, from 1939–1945. His detachment installed the anti-aircraft guns on Spike Island.
In 1946 Dad enlisted in the British Air Force, stationed in Leicester until his discharge in 1947. It was there he found his perfect English rose, Joyce Wilson, the love of his life. They were married February 8, 1947 - a union that lasted 67 years.
In 1957, Dad and Mom emigrated to Canada with their 3 children, Jim, Susan & Marie. Youngest daughter Teresa was born in 1960.The family resided in Vancouver until 1998 when Mom & Dad moved to South Surrey. Dad and Mom were blessed with 8 grandchildren: Sean, Susanne, Teresa, Sheila, Diana, Ylenia, Christina & Mike. Their Quinn dynasty continues to grow with the addition of
11 great grandchildren.
Dad worked as a Metal Sawyer for Galbraith and Sully from 1962 until 1973 and as a Machinist with Canada Car until his retirement in 1982 Dad was also recording secretary for the Machinists Union for many years.
Retirement allowed him to follow his passion for gardening, so in 1982, Dad started his own business. He also volunteered his time as a Master Gardener with VanDusen Gardens hosting Garden Clinics throughout the lower mainland. Dad also studied Reflexology and quickly became the class favourite for his wonderful foot massages. At 85, Dad bought his first computer and enrolled in computer classes to learn how to use it– the most senior in his class. Dad instilled his love of learning in all of us – an amazing man.
Dad and Mom loved to travel taking many trips together in their retirement. A devoted family man, Dad loved family gatherings, poetry, and music. At the grand old age of 103 he was still reciting poems from memory and singing along to his favourite songs. He will be remembered for his quick wit, his infectious smile, a kind and compassionate spirit, and that never ending twinkle in his eye.
After Mom passed on March 1st, 2014, Dad remained in his own home until the age of 101 when he went into long term care. Dad was always planning to “pull a runner” from Morgan Place. He finally got his wish and is now safely home with his beloved English Rose.
The kiss of the sun for pardon, the song of the birds for mirth, one is nearer God’s heart in the garden than anywhere else on earth.
Lovingly remembered by daughters Susan, Marie (Wayne), Teresa (Phil), 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, cherished sister Maureen (Amos), beloved niece Therese (James) and extended family throughout the UK and Hong Kong.
