GRABOVAC, Drago
June 18, 1942 – May 4, 2011
Drago Grabovac died quietly on a spring day in Vancouver, with his family at his side. We love and miss him.
Drago was born in Lijesce, Bosnia. He married his high school sweetheart and went on to graduate from the University of Belgrade with a degree in structural engineering. In 1971, he emigrated to Canada with his wife and young son. After a long career, mostly in Vancouver, he formed DRG Engineering Ltd., based in Kitimat, in partnership with his wife, a fellow engineer, and they had great success. Drago also served as president of the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce and vice president of the Terrace-Kitimat Airport Society. He played basketball, racquetball and soccer, and coached his sons’ soccer teams. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed outdoor pursuits such as walking, hiking and kayaking. Movies were a passion, especially Westerns.
Drago was always optimistic, full of jokes and laughter, and spontaneously drew people to him. His greatest love and pride was his family, for whose dreams he literally laid the foundations. He was strong, sensitive, tolerant and respectful; a presence so large, yet seldom drawing attention to himself; generous even to a fault. What lives on after death is what you’ve given to others. Losing Drago, we do not lose his gifts of love to us all.
Drago was predeceased by his parents Risto and Jelka, brother Slavko (Lela), and mother-in-law Milanka. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jelena; sons Ivan and Nickolas (Andrea); sister-in-law Zorica; grandchildren Julia, Emily, and Kai; brothers Milutin (Stojanka), Bosko (Meri), and Jakov (Madlen); cousin Velimir (Vesna); and other members of the extended family and friends.
A visitation will be held Monday, May 9th at 7:00pm – 9:00pm at Victory Memorial Park followed by a Funeral Service, Tuesday, May 10th at 2:00pm. 14831 28 Avenue, Surrey, BC
