He leaves his wife of 57 years, Margaret (Hudson) Wilkie; his children, Louise (Brian), Jackie (Rick), son Mark ((Donna), Nathan and grandchildren Colin, Kyle, Jessica and Christopher.
Born in Inverarity, Glenisla, Scotland, and raised outside of Forfar, Scotland; Fred also lived in Australia after WWII, and became a lifelong resident of Canada in 1957.
In his early years, Fred was an avid Scout and worked on the family farm. He would help sell milk for the family's business and eventually ran the farm during the war years. He met his wife, Margaret Hudson in Perthshire and they were married in Australia in1955.
After, Fred aka “Sonny” and Margaret had their first child, Louise; they chose to move to Powell River, British Columbia and eventually ended up in Vancouver.
Fred had a lifelong passion for animals, farming and nature. He was very proud of winning numerous ribbons and awards at the Scottish Annual Plowing Championships. No mean feat as it was a time when the plow was horse drawn and the test was one furrow at a time. He had a way with animals and plants and remained an avid gardener until his recent illness.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 6, 2012 at Sunnyside United Church, 15639 24th Avenue, Surrey, BC at 11:00am. Friends and family are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon or the BC Cancer Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
