Gerald (Gerry) Joseph Dorey passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on February 28, 2016 after a long illness. Gerry was born in Melville, Saskatchewan on March 19, 1930 and grew up on a farm during the Great Depression. He moved to British Columbia in the early 1950s and became a teacher.
Gerry spent his teaching career with School District #44 in North Vancouver teaching social studies variously at Carson Graham, Balmoral, Windsor, and Hamilton Secondary Schools. Gerry helped spearhead North Vancouver’s Outdoor School Program near Squamish, which is now over 40 years strong to this day. Gerry was well liked by teachers and students and is remembered by many of his former students as a teacher who made a real difference in the class room.
Gerry was also a local historian who lectured frequently on North Vancouver history. Gerry will be remembered by his family as kind and caring person who always put others ahead of himself. He is survived by his common law wife Marilyn Stewart, his sister Rita Frederick, his children, Diana (Geoff Baragar), Chris, and David Dorey, his step-children, Kim Winchell (Troy Gray) and Leanne Bailey (Chad Bailey), and his six grandchildren. He will be missed by all.
A Mass will be held in his name at St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church in North Vancouver on Sunday, March 6th, 2016 at 6:30 pm. A Celebration of Life may be organized at a later date; please phone Fraser Heights Chapel at 604-589-2559 to leave your contact information for details.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Covenant House BC at 604-638-GIFT (4438) in Gerry's memory would be welcomed.
