Helen Margaret Jones (nee Rose), age 98, passed away at her home surrounded by family in White Rock, BC on October 27, 2016. Helen treasured family above all else. So many guests were welcomed to her dinner table for special occasions. She loved to laugh and had an amazing sense of humour. She was an avid fan and loved to watch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at any and all of their various activities. Gramma was always quick to slip a little spending money or a good book into the hands of her many loved ones.
She was born in Diamond City, Alberta, in 1918. Helen is predeceased by her husband Dave, by her parents Blair and Alice Rose, her sister Catharine (Roy) Amundsen, her sister-in-law Megan Jones, and her grandson Chris Jones. As a girl, she loved her horse and her cat and hiking up Turtle Mountain where she grew up in the Crowsnest Pass. She obtained a degree in honours chemistry from the U of A in 1941 where she was also a member of the track team. It was there that she met her future husband Dave, also from the Pass. They performed together in Gilbert & Sullivan productions where Helen was a violinist and Dave was a singer. After working in a lab during the war, Helen retired to start her family with Dave, who would be her husband for 64 years until his passing in 2006. She and Dave loved to golf together and took many vacations to California and Hawaii. After 55 years in Calgary Helen moved with daughter Tracy and husband Doug to White Rock, BC where she received the most loving companionship and care through to the end of her life. Tracy and Doug welcomed all into their home and Helen lived a rich life surrounded by friends and family. She continued her love of music throughout her life, with violin lessons still being part of her weekly routine. Knitting was always a passion and she shared that love with her friends at the church’s Stitch n Chat group.
Helen is lovingly remembered by her six children Hugh Jones, Tracy Walker (Doug), Tom Jones, Cathie Perry (Kim), Sheila Vataiki (John) and Bruce Jones (Kim). Helen was a grandmother to Robin (George), Sean, Chris, Crista (Cathy), Dave (Martha), Jonathan, Emilie (Moxy), Marie, Jacqueline (Andrew), Kaitlin (Pat), Carmen, Monivoi, Kaprielli, Tomasi, Tyson, Hayden and Cole. She was a great-grandmother to Josh, Joe (Claire), Liz, Sammy, Danny, Mikey, Cal, Dell, Marlowe, Saya, Emma, Anna-Marie, Dylan, Taylor, Quinn and Blythe.
She is also lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law Eira Spaner and family, the Amundsen family and her dear friends Roxy Hope-Ross and Joan Wylie.
The family would especially like to thank Dr. Benjamin Tyrell and Diana Clifford who provided loving care during this time. The family is grateful to Reverend Bruce McAndless-Davis for his support over the past while. Thanks also to Victory Memorial Park for their assistance at this time.
A memorial service will be held at First United Church White Rock on Saturday November 12th at 10:30 am. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers donations could be made to a charity of their choice.
