Joan Elaine Toews, age 66, passed away Friday evening Oct 13, 2017 from a brain tumour. She is survived by her loving siblings: Russel (and Sharon), Norine (and Keith) Freedman, Tommy (and Helen) ; her nieces Ronalee Hansen, Jennifer Martens, Lauren Woelfle, and Kirsten Toews, and nephews Brian and Kyle Freedman. She is predeceased by her older brother Bradley Toews and her nephew Bradley Toews.
Joan was born in Swalwell Alberta on Nov 10, 1950 and moved to British Columbia with her family in the summer of 1965. She always loved a scholastic challenge, winning the governor general’s award in Grade 9. In high school she displayed a keen sense for numbers and accounting courses to the extent that her teachers encouraged her to pursue a career in that field. Initially studying at UBC to become a teacher, while working summers at Brookside Farms office to finance that adventure, Joan opted to switch career paths to become a Certified General Accountant. Brookside Farms employment gave way to Shanahan’s Building and a residential move from Clearbrook to Surrey. Meanwhile, Joan put her love of teaching and children to use through her church.
In her spare time Joan loved shopping with her nieces, video nights with family and the ever needed walking of Norine's dog(s). Special holidays included many trips with Tommy and family to Disneyland and joining Russ and Sharon at Time Share resorts. Joan was always up for a cruise vacation, whether with friends or family.
Joan lavished both her love and finances on family, church, missionaries and various charities. We will miss you "Joanie", “ Joansie", “Joan-the-Bone”, and look forward to seeing you in heaven.
Her Memorial service will be held Monday Oct 23, 2017 10:00 am at North Langley Community Church 21015 96 Ave Langley, BC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to any MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) project.
