November 13, 1926 - March 16, 2016
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ken Jones at his residence, The Kinsmen Lodge in Surrey, March 16, 2016. Ken is pre-deceased by his wife Myrtle Victoria in January 1997. He is survived by his son Dan (Kathy), grandsons Nicholas and Kevin (Candice). Daughter, Mernie (Tyler) Senchuk, grandson Anthony. One sister-in-law, Marge Jones, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Ken was born November 13, 1926 in St. John NB, and had 3 brothers and one sister. He joined the army in July of 1943 under aged. He was stationed in Vernon BC, but by the time he was of age the war was over. He was discharged in May 1946 and moved to Vancouver. There he met and married Myrtle in May of 1947. They purchased a house in East Van on 32nd and St. Catherines St. and raised their family there.
They became quite active in little league baseball volunteering as coach, umpire, and score keeping. Even after the family married and moved away they spent countless hours at South Memorial park mentoring the newest young baseball stars. They would follow the all-star teams around the province and cheer them on in their pursuit of winning the Canadian championship and a berth at the little league World Series in Williamsport Pennsylvania.
Ken was also very active with the ANAF unit 26 at 43rd and Fraser. He held many executive positions including president and became a life member. They spent many a Saturday enjoying a cold one, and buying raffle tickets for the weekly meat draw.
Ken worked his entire career as a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters union Local 170 as a steam fitter. After his retirement, they sold the family house in Vancouver and moved to The Wyndham Estate condominium complex in North Surrey to be closer to his daughter who lived nearby. They became very active with the strata council and were instrumental in starting many of the social events at the complex's social facility. They especially enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren, taking them out to parks and out for Chinese food. But the highlight was an epic trip to California and to Disneyland with all of our entire family. Sadly Myrtle passed away in January 1997, but Ken continued with most of the activities as best he could. But in 2006 he had a series of medical problems that left him unable to live there anymore. He moved to the Kinsmen Lodge, a residential care facility in November 2013. He quickly became a favorite with the staff with all his wit and humor. He spent most of his time watching his favorite 60's TV shows. Sadly his health continued to decline until he passed away in March 2016.
We would like to thank his Dr.'s, Nurses David and Ray, and all other caregivers in the Holland neighborhood at the Kinsmen Lodge, for all their amazing support while Ken lived there, especially during his final months. Also a special thank you to Nicole Webb of First Memorial for all her help, support, and compassion during this difficult time.
The family will be holding a private celebration of life, date TBA.
Any donations would be greatly appreciated to The Kinsmen Lodge Care Facility in Surrey. 9650 - 137A Street. Surrey BC. V3T 4H9. 604-588-0445.
