The Cunningham family lost an integral thread of its tapestry on June 28, 2022, with the passing of father, husband, brother and uncle Kevin Cunningham. Throughout his battle with cancer, Kevin remained upbeat and optimistic, and persistently dedicated to his family. He is survived by his wife Kelly and their two sons, Maxton and Rhett, as well as his six siblings and their families.
Born on July 27, 1960, in Montreal as the sixth of eight kids, Kevin’s gentle and enthusiastic heart will be deeply missed by all who loved him. As a middle sibling in a large and boisterous family, Kevin never got lost in milieu. He distinguished himself with his positive mindset, big thinking, and ready smile. As a brother, he showed up for his siblings with gusto, going “all in” on their hobbies with an eagerness that was unmatched. Patient, gentle and caring, “Coach Kev” offered his family everything that he had, and then some.
Kevin was quiet and loving, with a soft gaze and a sense of humour. He was a total believer in the power of persistence. He dug deeply into the nuances of his passions and exuded total engagement with the interests of those he loved most. Kevin was born with a natural understanding that great richness exists when you look beyond the surface. As a father, he was accepting and patient beyond belief. He offered reason, yet showed up without reservations for every pursuit, desire, and curiosity in his sons’ lives. Kevin guided them with a deep consideration and warmth that has shaped the kindness they continue to offer to the world. As a partner, Kevin shone brightly and dependably through life’s challenges with compassion, empathy, and an ability to persistently, somehow, see good through it all.
Kevin loved to talk and used every opportunity – from his long walks to bike races – for conversation. Some of his favourite topics in recent years included the music industry, golf, and the general superiority of the Seahawks and their fans. He thought he was pretty funny, and his family agreed (most of the time). Kevin was so good at showing up, that his presence in stadiums and concert halls supporting his family and cheering them on was a predictable given. A big thinker, with often unique and unconventional ideas, Kevin had an entrepreneurial spirit and a total devotion to what he believed in. From starting businesses, organizing cycling teams and driving his brother to motocross competitions to the front-row of music venues listening to his boys play. The chapters of his life are held together by his love for his family and his complete, unwavering dedication to them.
A small memorial will be in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.
