January 19, 1929 - June 27, 2025
It is with sadness and deep gratitude that we mourn the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Ludgerdina Vente, who departed peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Saviour on June 27, 2025, at 96 years of age. Diny was born in Ten Boer, The Netherlands, to Jurgen and Metje Steenhuis (née Veltman), the second of 5 children. She attended school in Uithuizermeiden, from age 6 to 13, and enjoyed a happy childhood there, where she recalled trips to the sea, playing in the nearby lumberyard, and evening skating on the local ice rink. Though the depression and the war times were very difficult, and many necessities were in short supply, food was adequate, as the family kept a large garden, which provided vegetables and potatoes. Diny attended school until she completed grade 7. She was employed as a house cleaner until the age of 17, then worked in a grocery store and several bakeries. It was when she was employed in a bakery in Terbregge, near Rotterdam, that she met our father, Adrianus Willem Vente. Diny and Art were married on April 1, 1952. Also in 1952, shortly after their wedding day, they immigrated to Canada, and settled in the Toronto area. There they were blessed with 2 daughters and a son. In 1968, the family moved to British Columbia and settled in Burnaby. In 1970 they moved to Edmonton, Alberta; and in 1972 they moved back to British Columbia, settling first in Burnaby and later in New Westminster. In 2009 they moved to Langley, British Columbia, residing first in Avalon Gardens and later in Manoah Manor. After Art’s passing in 2019, Diny remained at Manoah Manor until late 2021. She returned briefly to Avalon Gardens and then moved into long term care at Evergreen Baptist Home in Whiterock. There she resided until her passing. Through the years, Diny was a caring and loving mother and an excellent homemaker. She opened her home and her heart to others, welcoming several infants and children into our family through foster care in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Diny enjoyed the outdoors, gardening flowers and vegetables, camping, going on picnics at Boyd Creek Park, Wasaga Beach and Crescent Beach, and spending time at their summer retreats at Paradise Lakes and Cultus Lake. Diny was always ready to volunteer, selflessly supporting and hosting refugees, helping with Vacation Bible School, volunteering at Fraser Valley Christian High School to assist students with special needs, knitting miles and miles of stitches to raise funds to support Christian Education, later leading fundraising events for a Christian seniors’ residence. She was an active and involved grandmother, and was dearly loved by all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Diny is predeceased by her husband, Art, of 67 years; her parents, Jurgen and Metje Steenhuis; and her sisters, Annie Wendels and Betsy Plieter, and her brother, Harm Steenhuis. She will be dearly missed by her sister Grace (Clarence) Alkema; her children Metha (Wally), Joanne (John), Andrew (Renita); her grandchildren Aron (Nadia), Leslie, Jeff (Jessica), Karen, and Sharon (Mike); and her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Rachel, Blake, Max, Grace, Everett, Jonah, Kayden, Ethan, and Emma. A private graveside service will be held for the family at Valleyview Memorial Gardens.
