It is with great sadness to announce the loss of Patricia Maydanyk Barnes, beloved wife, mother, sister and friend, who peacefully passed on October 15, 2024 at the age of 72. Pat was born in Vancouver, BC and grew up in Richmond with siblings Linda, Claudia and Mike. Her parents, Al and Mary, instilled the importance of family, friends, and tradition—values that Pat upheld throughout her entire life. Pat’s love for music and entertainment began at a young age from attending concerts such as the Bolshoi Ballet to dancing at the Ukrainian Hall where her mom and dad played in the orchestra. In her early childhood, Pat was active in baseball and track and field and enjoyed going on adventures in rural Richmond.
Pat began her career as a flight attendant at Air Canada soon after graduating from Richmond High School in 1970. During her remarkable 35 year career, Pat was able to create life-long friendships while traveling the world and exploring new cultures. Shortly after becoming a flight attendant, she took her first trip to the small Caribbean Island of Barbados where she was captivated by the white sandy beaches and charming island life.
Pat continued to visit Barbados for the decades to come and reached a turning point during one particular trip in 1975 when she met Barry, a surfer boy who offered her a ride on the side of de road. Her visits to the island became more frequent and in April of 1976, Pat and Barry were married in a beautiful wedding at Grove Plantation. They began their lives together in Vancouver and later relocated to Richmond where they welcomed the addition of their daughter Stephanie in 1982. They eventually settled in South Surrey in mid 1980’s and welcomed son Joshua in 1989.
After her retirement in 2018, Pat’s love for travel continued through exploration of new places such as Nepal and setting sail on many cruises with family and friends—her favorite being the beloved Windstar. Her continued love for music can be seen through her extensive record collection and concerts attended: Bob Marley, Sam and Dave, Willie Nelson, the Merry Men, and Byron Lee, just to name a few. Pat’s passion for photography allowed her to capture all these incredible moments of her life for us to remember forever.
Pat will be loved and missed dearly by all those whose lives she touched. We will carry her memory in our hearts and honor her devotion to family, friendship and tradition in future generations to come. She is survived by her husband of 48 years Barry, children Stephanie and Josh (Vivian), sister Claudia, brother Mike (Lorrie), and dog Otis.
