

With sorrow in our grief but with joy in the hope of Jesus Christ, we announce the passing of Pieter Cornelis van Smeerdyk. Pieter died peacefully in his sleep on September 17, 2023 in Langley, B.C. Born August 17, 1927, Pieter grew up in Zwanenburg, North Holland. After he was enlisted in the army, he served in Indonesia in the late 40’s, then returned home shortly to emigrate to Canada. A few years later, Catherina Werkman came to Canada, also from Holland, and they were married October 18, 957.
Pieter was a hard worker who laboured in greenhouses, lumber mills, and warehouses. An avid gardener, he especially enjoyed raising his own flowers which he sold at the United Flower Growers Co-Op. In his retirement, Piet and Cathy served many years as volunteers with Bibles for Missions Thrift Store.
He is survived by his son Gerald (Cora), daughter Anita; grandchildren: Jessica (Kevin), Steven (Biannka), Danai (Tiberiu), Quentin, Cole (Lexi), Keshia (Nate); and great-grandchildren: Katrina, Alexa, Emma, Ethan, Liam, Finnley, Elliott, Justin, Everly and Wilder. Pieter was predeceased by his parents Gerrit and Ariana Jacoba van Smeerdijk, brothers Wim and Ger, grandson Nathan and son-in-law Gary (Anita). He will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
A family viewing will be held at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre, 14831 28 Ave Surrey, BC on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 1:15pm followed by interment at 2:30 pm. The Celebration of Life will be held at Willoughby Christian Reformed Church, 20525 72nd Ave, Langley BC on September 25 at 3 pm. Donations can be made to the Bible League of Canada in his honour.
