Steffi passed away peacefully, with her daughter’s hand on her heart, in the very early morning hours at Evergreen Terraces, White Rock. Though the ravages of Alzheimer’s had kept her from doing anything for herself, or communicating, for almost ten years, her heart and body remained strong.

Strength and courage were an integral part of Steffi’s nature. She was born into an impoverished farming family in Croatia (a former Yugoslav republic.) Growing up in a war-torn communist country, losing her mother to tuberculosis at the age of eleven, Steffi knew real hunger and suffering. But she had a secret dream – to live a free, happy life in America.

At the age of 18 she escaped with a factory co-worker, Zvonko, who would become her husband. After a dangerous trek into Austria and many challenges, the couple ended up in Moose Jaw, Sask. with no money, or knowledge of English. Steffi, however, had been placed to work as a maid for a doctor and his wife, and Zvonko was a skilled carpenter. Together they made a life, raised a family, and became successful, side-by-side designing, building, decorating and selling their beautiful homes in Moose Jaw.

Steffi had longed to see the world and that dream also came true. Her very first trip with Zvonko to Oahu, Hawaii, in 1959, was a magical experience that she impressed upon the kids. As a result, her daughter was later drawn to make a life on Oahu with her husband.

Steffi was kind, loving and optimistic, a hard worker, a devoted mother, and an award-winning gardener. She cooked, sewed, painted houses and more. She loved music, dancing, and nature. However her adored son’s ongoing illness and passing at age 49 was the heart-break of her life. We believe she is re-united with him and other loved-ones now. She is deeply loved and will forever be remembered.

Predeceased by her beloved husband and her son, Bob, she leaves behind her daughter Kala (Jennie) and husband, Mark; her dear sister Katica, niece, Ankica and nephew, Ivica; her step-brother, Vlado, his wife Bonnie, niece, Alisa, and nephew, Bret; her step-sisters, Nada and Blanca. Steffi also loved and leaves behind the sons from Zvonko’s first marriage, her step-sons, Ivan and Steve, Ivan's wife, Joanne, and the cherished grandchildren Krasna, Vesna, Brani and Tiki. Alzheimers disease robbed her of her memories and the ability to grow old with her loved ones. She was truly a remarkable woman and an inspiration to those left behnd.
