I read Zach's obit today after he came to mind out of nowhere. It brought me to tears as someone who only saw Zach around at a handful of meetings and talked to him once or twice. This was back in 2018, following his time at Aurora. We spoke once at a men's meeting and I remember thinking "this guy seems bright and humble and funny. I hope he has a future in recovery...I believe he has a future in recovery. He's 21 and will be just fine." He told me about his work at the time (construction, if memory serves) and seemed quite grateful for everything. Reports from mutual friends who'd spent much more time with Zach than I did, at Whispering Pines and Aurora, confirmed his good character and the positive impact he had on people. I'm so happy to see more in the way of that posted here on this memorial website, though obviously heartbroken given the loss to everyone who's posted about Zach. My condolences + prayers to you all. Rest in Peace buddy. 


I was in Aurora with Zach & instantly when I met him he was the nicest & most sincere guy I’ve met to this day. Even on my worst days there he would stay with me & find a way to make me smile or put me in a better mood. I ended up being in aurora both times Zach was there & we became really close, one of my closest friends in years actually. I ended up back at aurora a third time about a month after December, that’s when I found out & couldn’t stop crying for days. No matter how much of a smart ass (and believe me he was a smart ass, in a kind & funny way, never singling anyone out) he was being at the time, everyone loved him no matter what & I think that’s is what I will miss most about Zach, his kindness towards others and always trying to make people laugh no matter what he was going through. 

I miss you Zach you’ll always be in my heart & my memories.

I had the pleasure of working with Zach during his stay at Whispering Pines.  He spoke very fondly of his grandfather who had recently passed away, and always described his relationship with his mother as very close. He wanted so much  to return to Vancouver to be nearer to family and positive friends. What I remember most sweetly about Zach is the kindness and patience he extended towards an elderly woman who was in treatment at the same time.  He gained our respect day after day. I’m so sorry that his family and friends were not able to spend more time with him. 

I remember one day about 10 years ago.. I was out and got a call from Maggie to tell me that there were crows all over my back yard dive bombing our cat.  I raced home to find Zach had it under control .  He had his BB gun and was shooting all the crows and protecting our beloved cat! 

We lived next door to the Plett’s, and although my kids were quite a few years younger than Zach, he always made time for them.  Whether it was to play baseball, hide and seek, or to build a snow fort out of recycling containers in the yard... RIP Zach.. you’ll always be that special little 12 year old boy to me ♥️

Our most sincere condolences!  We are so sorry to hear about Zach!  Its uncomprehendable to lose a child.   Whatever his struggle, he is now at peace, and with time hopefully it will ease the pain, and refurbish the wonderful memories you have of him. We always talk about the great times we had at hockey with the boys in their early years when we lived in Tsawwasswen.
