

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of the late Joseph and Lena (Gregory) Carter, Gregg later moved with his parents to the small town of Amory, Mississippi, where he grew up.
After graduating from Amory High School, he went on to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work from what is now Rhodes College, formerly Southwestern at Memphis, in Memphis, Tennessee. Following his graduation, he worked as a Social Worker for the Tennessee Department of Welfare. He next entered service with the United States Army, assigned to active duty during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. Having completed military service, he studied at and graduated from the Meadville Theological School of the University of Chicago.
As a Unitarian-Universalist minister, he served churches in Rhode Island, New York, and throughout Massachusetts during his career. When he left the active ministry, he spent several years caring for his mother, who died at age 97. After her death, he returned to Somerset in 2001.
An amateur organist and lifelong lover of music, he was also an avid reader who loved and taught calligraphy.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Scott Barton Carter of Yarmouthport MA, his daughter, Catherine E. Carter and her husband, Kevin Seward, of Holliston MA, his sister-in-law, Marcia Akerholm, of Smithfield, RI and many cousins in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Virginia.
