

Born in Providence, RI, the daughter of the late Arthur and Dorothy (Cottell) Pickering, she grew up in Barrington, RI and was a graduate of Barrington High School, before moving to Swansea in 1978.
Joan was a Clinical Lab Technician for several physicians in the Rhode Island area, including oncologist Dr. Chaquette in Providence. She later went on to earn a certificate in Landscape Design from Boston Architectural School and Harvard University. She enjoyed landscaping, gardening, being outdoors, reading, and, most especially, spending time with her beloved grandchildren, Stellah and Emmett.
Joan is survived by her two sons, Mikeljon Freitas of North Dighton, and Nicholas Freitas and his wife Stephanie of Dighton, and their two children Stellah and Emmett Freitas; two sisters Judy Clow and Dorie Balch; two brothers Kenny Pickering and Donald Pickering and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Visitation on Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 10am – 12pm in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea.
