John L. Niewola, Sr., age 73, of Swansea, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 7, 2026 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Donna M. (Roszkowicz) Niewola to whom he had been married for over 50 years.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late William F. Niewola, Sr. and Marjorie (Ward) Niewola, spent his youth in Fall River and lived in Somerset for many years prior to moving to Swansea.
John attended Kinyon-Campbell Business School where he studied computer science and went on to become the Director of Information Systems for the City of Fall River for over 30 years, retiring in 2014.
A dedicated supporter of the Fall River Falcons Pop Warner Youth Football organization, he enjoyed cooking, traveling, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. He had a special love for his dogs Reese and Levi, whom he thoroughly spoiled. Above all, John cherished time with his grandsons and took great pride in attending their sporting events and celebrating their achievements.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Alyssa Franco of Swansea; one son, John L. Niewola, Jr. of Uncasville, CT; two grandsons, Nathan J. and Logan M. Franco; one sister, Julia Charette and her husband Roger of Stuart, FL; two brothers, Raymond and Michael Niewola, both of Fall River; brother-in-law, Raymond Roszkowicz and his wife Christine; cherished friends, Steven and Susan Winarski and Richard and Susan Coute, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. John was the brother of the late William F. Niewola, Jr., Edward Niewola, Joseph “Mickey” Cahill, John Cahill, and Margaret “Peggy” Shepherd.
His Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 10:00AM to 12:00PM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea, followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00NOON. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY, 10306. Burial private.
