

Jose N. Sarmento, age 88, of Rehoboth, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at Somerset Ridge with his wife and daughters at his side. He was the beloved husband of Aldina M. (Martins) Sarmento with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.
Born in Faial, Acores, Portugal, the son of the late Jose and Laura (Garcia) Sarmento he immigrated to the United States in 1959 settling initially in Somerset, but lived most of his life in Dartmouth, MA.
He worked as a skilled machinist for both Morse Cutting Tools and Johnson & Johnson Orthopedics and retired from his position in SPD at Southcoast Health in 1997.
A veteran of the Portuguese Army, he played trumpet in the military band. Jose was very proud of his Portuguese heritage and the island from which he hailed. For many years, he was an active member of the Faial Social Club (Clube Uniao Faialense) and served as both President and board member during his tenure and loved watching the Benfica Soccer Club games on television. In his retirement, he kept busy breeding and raising canaries, fishing in Padanaram, listening to music, and spending time with his wife, daughters and granddaughter. Jose enjoyed traveling back to Faial frequently to visit with family and friends throughout his life.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Dr. Nidia B. Williams and her husband Duane Pacheco and Helinette C. Souza and her husband Craig, all of Swansea; granddaughter, Jenna N. DaCosta and her husband Zachary and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Mario and Antonio Sarmento.
His visitation will be held Monday, March 18, 2024 from 8:00 – 9:30 AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Road, Swansea followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. John of God Church, 1036 Brayton Avenue, Somerset. Burial will be private.
