Joseph M. Mello, age 64, of Swansea, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2013 in the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. He was the husband of Paula (Gardella) Mello to whom he had been married for 41 years.
Born in Fall River, the son of the late Manuel and Belmira (Medeiros) Mello, he spent his youth in Fall River before moving to Swansea almost 40 years ago. He was a graduate of BMC Durfee High School and Fischer Jr. College.
Mr. Mello was employed as the Maintenance Supervisor at the Brayton Point Power Station where he worked for over 40 years. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the United States Navy, an avid golfer and a member of the Touisset Country Club in Swansea.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three daughters - Jennifer Mason of Riverside, RI, Allison Garand of N. Attleboro, MA and Meredith Rapoza of Dighton, MA; four sisters - Mary Jorge of Northport, FL, Madeline Medeiros of Assonet, MA, Margaret Mello of Cape Cod, and Melinda Mello of Green Bank, WV; grandchildren Avery Garand and Emelia Rapoza and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 10AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT BIRCHCREST, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea, followed by his funeral mass at 11am in St. Dominic’s Church, 1277 GAR Highway, Swansea. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 5 to 8pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904.
