Joseph A. Rousseau, “Archie,” age 84, of Swansea, passed away, Sunday, January 5, 2014 in Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Vivian T. (Fortier) Rousseau to whom he has been married for the past 62 years.
Born in Rehoboth, a son of the late Joseph and Angelina (Vermette) Rousseau, he lived in Rehoboth before moving to Swansea in 1951.
A graduate of Bristol County Agricultural High School, class of 1947, he served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War and was discharged as Corporal.
Mr. Rousseau was employed by Rousseau General Contractors in Swansea for many years and was a volunteer Fire Fighter with the Swansea Fire Department for over 30 years retiring as Chief. He was a member of the American Legion in Swansea post 303.
An avid Red Sox fan, he enjoyed playing in his card league on Tuesday evenings, taking trips to the Casino, golfing, hunting, gardening, and woodworking.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter; Susan Woodruff and her husband James of Swansea, one son; Thomas Rousseau and his companion Jessica Donnell of Acton, ME, three sisters; Rose Axon of NM, Lillian Andrews of Rehoboth and Jeanette Nadeau and her husband Oscar of Swansea, four granddaughters; Kris Vigue and her husband Duane of Millinocket, ME, Jill Pacheco and her husband Michael of Somerset, Sara Lambert and her husband Daniel of Swansea, Jennifer Rousseau and her fiancé Nic Kiefer of Salem, MA, five great-grandchildren; Tyler Nadeau, Nathan Lambert, Olivia and Isaac Pacheco, and Salmon Vigue, and several nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Imelda Dias, Ora Rose, Anita Massarotti, and Ernest, Armand, Lucien, Alcide and Albert Rousseau.
His Funeral will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 8:00AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at BIRCHCREST, 189 Gardner’s Neck Rd., Swansea, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00AM in St. Dominic’s Church, 1277 G.A.R. Highway, Swansea. Visiting hours Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00PM. Contributions in his honor may be made to the Nathan Lambert Fund c/o Southcoast Federal Credit Union, 363 Highland Ave., Fall River, MA 02720. Burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, Swansea.
