Laurence M. Curtis, Jr. “Larry,” of Swansea, Massachusetts, died Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at The Royal of Fairhaven. He was the husband of Martha (Hayden) Curtis to whom he has been married for the past 33 years.

Born in Boston, the eldest son of the late Laurence M. and Millicent (Shaw) Curtis, he lived in Newton Centre and South Easton before moving to Swansea in 2001.

Mr. Curtis was a graduate of Newton High School and attended the United States Naval Academy before graduating from Wentworth Institute Boston and New England College in Henniker, NH. He was a United States Navy Veteran and served in the Naval Reserve in Boston.

A contract engineer, Mr. Curtis worked for the former Factory Insurance Association F.I.A./I.R.I in Philadelphia, PA, before being hired by Factory Mutual Engineering Association (now F.M. Global) in Norwood, MA in 1971. He retired from Factory Mutual as an Appraisal Training Manager in 1999. He was a senior member of the American Society of Appraisers.

Mr. Curtis was a member of the First Christian Congregational Church, the Cedar Cove Club, and Coles River Club all in Swansea.

A ham radio operator, he held a membership in the Amateur Radio Relay League (A.R.R.L). He was a member of the Hereshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, RI, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine, and Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT. He was also a member of the Catboat Association.

Surviving in addition to his wife, brother; Craig S. Curtis and his wife Sandra S. of Block Island, RI, sister; Holly Curtis of Stonington, CT, mother-in-law; Martha W. Hayden of Swansea, nephews; Brian S. Curtis of Dallas, TX, Sean S. Curtis of Stonington, CT, Ian W. Sloane of Milton, MA, niece, Amelia Sloane Hoyt of Warren, RI, great nephews; Cole A. and Kyle M. Curtis and their mother Bridget E. Murphy and great niece; Cassandra Hoyt.

His service will be held Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11:00AM at the First Christian Congregational Church, 1113 G.A.R. Highway, Swansea. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 4:00 to 7:00PM in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea. Contributions in his honor may be made to the First Christian Congregational Church "The Olde White Church," attention: memorial fund, 1113 G.A.R. Highway, Swansea, MA 02777 or to the Carolyn Sampson Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund at Joseph Case High School, P.O. Box 33, Swansea, MA 02777. Burial private.

I so enjoyed the conversations at the Coles River Club events over the last few years and missed both Larry and Marthas attendance in more recent events. Glad he is in a better place and free of discomfort.
