Hi Gloria and Alan, I just wanted to let you know how sorry I was to hear about Dan R. I haven't seen him for quite a long time but the last time I did he gave me a big bear hug! He was playing at the Westin in Halifax where I was attending a convention. The band was belting out the tunes and we were dancing up a storm!! What a talented musician. That talent was obviously not shared with our side of the family. Not a musician among us! Thinking of you all. It's hard enough to suffer the loss but at a time like this it's all the more difficult. Sending hugs and thoughts your way. Kathy, Phil and Ian

Dear Gloria and Al, My sincerest condolences on the loss of your son and brother. I know what a close family you are and that Dan’s departure will leave a sorrowful spot in your hearts . I’ve known Dan for over 30yrs and attended many many events ( often weekly) where he played over the years, he was always that solid star who could keep wild cats in tune and time. He had a great sense of humour and gave the best honest hugs ever!. He was true to himself , a true friend and he will be dearly missed. Love to you both ❤️ ❤️Normajean

Danny took a course from me over 20 years ago. During that time, and the occasions that I met him over the years, I remember Danny as a cordial and kind person. I only saw him perform once. That was with Jimmy Cobb about 7-8 years ago. It was also the last time that I saw him. I extend my condolences to his family and friends. I did not know he was from Sydney Mines. Each year, I run the Johnny Miles 5K road race in Sydney Mines. The next time that I run that race I will have Danny on my mind.I extend my condolences to his family and friends.

Danny was a great friend in High School. I had the pleasure of playing in his band for about a year back then. Many good laughs were had in the kind company of The Sutherlands. My heart is broken at his early departure from this earth. But Danny will live on in the hearts and memories of Gloria and Alan and his many friends. Rest easy, old friend.

Our deepest sympathies go out to you and our family. We've had the pleasure of knowing Dan for a long time back in Antigonish, NS. He was such a wonderful and talented bass player who could really feel the music throughout everything he did. Dan left a permanent impression on our lives and we will never forget him. I really enjoyed sharing new music with him. I remember he always had his bass on his lap playing along with the stereo or the television. I was always thrilled to hear him play the theme song to "Seinfield" which was played on a keyboard but sounded like slap bass. I recall Dan showing me a used music man sting ray bass which he had recently discovered and was thrilled to have. I remember the hot wings he would make from scratch with three hot sauces including Jamaican Hellfire. If we were listening to music and Dan didn't have his bass in his hand, he would thump out the rhythm with his heel on the floor, with one hand beating on his chest and the other hand on his belly. We will miss him greatly.

I will always remember Danny, fellow musician and schoolmate from high school and St FX and neighbour from Greening Drive in Antigonish. Amazingly talented guy but also kind, respectful and down to earth. My condolences.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dans passing. I remember him during his years at St.F.X. My dad worked in the Jazz building where Dan spent a lot of time, they loved to pick on each other. Dan was such a wonderful person and an extremely talented musician who will be dearly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

To the Sutherland Family
I was deeply saddened to hear of Danny's passing. I first met Danny in stage band in high school and I reveled in his salty language and the music rippling from his bass. He would play brilliantly with humility and then shrug off his talent like it was no big deal. Whenever Danny and I crossed paths over the years, he always greeted me with a hug and a "so how you been", as if we had been talking just yesterday, rather than months or years ago. My thoughts and my heart are with you and your family at this terrible time of loss.
