Maisie Belle Caldwell
May 3, 1935 – June 6, 2019
Maisie Caldwell, 84, of Sydney Mines passed away June 6, 2019 at the An Cala unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a sudden illness.
She was born May 3, 1935 to the late Margaret (Forrest) and Russell Fraser. She married Donnie Caldwell in 1955 and together they had 6 children and then were further blessed with 18 grandchildren and 8 great grand children.
She is survived by her children Belinda (Paul) McGean, Sydney Mines, Melanie (Brian) Brown, Guelph ON, Todd (Martina) Caldwell, North Sydney, Darren (Kelly) Caldwell, Elora ON, Tracey (Billy) Morrison, Sydney Mines, and daughter in law Michelle Caldwell, Sydney Mines. She is also survived by her 18 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her siblings, Braw (Ollie) Fraser, Alexander (Jeanette) Fraser, Erwin (Mabel) Fraser, Agnes (Sandy) Scott, Edward (Sally) Fraser, and in laws Betty (Carl) Sommers, Linda (Armando) Sanguigni, Stewart (Goretti) Caldwell, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Donald (Donnie) Caldwell and her son Sheldon Caldwell. Also predeceased by her mother in law, Violet Caldwell, father in law, Donald L Caldwell, brother in law Allan Caldwell, sister in law Sharon Fraser and her nephew Roger Fraser.
Our mother was happiest when she was with her family and spoiling them. She lived to cook and bake and was very adventurous in the kitchen. She was really a short order cook always trying her best to please everyone and she never let us down. An invitation to a meal at Maisie's was always accepted and enjoyed, especially during the lobster season. She made annual Christmas deliveries of her shortbread and plum loaf to her family and friends. She was still making her own bread as store bought bread just didn't cut it for Maisie. Halloween usually brought more adults than kids, they came for their favourite fudge. She watched a tv show in the 60's which featured a doughnut recipe, and she has been making those same coconut doughnuts for more than 50 years. All of her children had no choice but to learn how to cook when we moved out, always calling her for advice. She looked so forward to every Sunday evening when her sister in law and best friend, Betty Sommers would come for a gab.
Visitation will take place on Monday June 10 from 6 until 9 PM at Fillmore Whitman, Clyde Ave Sydney Mines. Funeral Service Tuesday June 11 at 11 AM at Carman United Church, Sydney Mines with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. Memories and condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.fillmoreandwhitman.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Carman United Church, the An Cala Unit at The Cape Breton Regional Hospital or any charity of your choice. I never knew Ms. Caldwell personally but have heard many kind things about her from her daughter in law Kelly Walker Caldwell. She seemed to be a kind and generous person . We could use a few more like her in this world of ours. Rest in Peace.
