It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved Margaret (Peg, Peggy) Francis MacDougall, on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at the age of 93, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital. Born on July 15, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John Michael and Maryann (Young) Donovan.
In her earlier years she moved to Toronto and worked at Laura Secord, and shortly thereafter returned home and worked at the Keltic Lodge for over twenty years, during which time she left for a couple of years to try out her baking skills at the Ceilidh Bakery with another skilled baker and friend Margaret Williams, and back to her laundry family at Keltic Lodge until her retirement.
She loved vacationing with her friends and family and took great pride in making sure the tea pot was on and fresh rolls were ready for any weary traveler. The door was always open for a sing song, chat, or any vacationing family or friends. Peg was a woman of devoted faith and a member of St. Peter’s Parish Church, Ingonish Beach. Peg loved to knit and share her wool socks to all who needed them, she loved knitting preemie jackets, hats, and booties that she donated to the IWK and hospitals around Cape Breton. She was a member of Branch 95 Legion, Ingonish Beach and a 4-H leader for many years for the youth of her community. Peggy was an avid card player and loved bingo, her card buddies will miss her humour. Peg will miss her morning coffee discussions that would last all morning with her family and friends. Friends and family that would call to see how she was doing would be greeted with her usual saying “I’m just rocking my life away”.
Peggy was predeceased by her husband Michael (Mike) Theodore MacDougall, brother Newman (Beatrice) Donovan, Herb (Audrey) Donovan, sister Ann (Charles) Hines, Elizabeth (Tim) MacDougall, Emma (Francis) Doyle, sister-in-law Carol Donovan, Lorraine Donovan, Aggie Donovan, brother-in-law Pete Migel, Neil MacKinnon, and Joe Powers.
She is survived by her beloved Maria (Kelvin) Hussey, grandchildren Shoshanna (Jim) Clark, Willie MacKinnon, Cohen (Erin) Hussey, and eight great grandchildren Johnathan, Kelvin, Malcolm, Hudson, Sophia, Ashelyn, Autumn, and Avery. Her dear sisters, Louise, Mary (Stephen), Selena, and Claire, and loving brothers Tom, Tim, Finley (Shirley) and Malcom. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, God children, and dear friends.
We would like to express our gratitude and thanks to all the Doctors, Nurses, and Staff at Buchanan Memorial Hospital for their kindness and care of Peggy. A very special thank you goes out to Patricia Fricker who Peg loved dearly for your patient nature, care, wellness checks, and, in the final months, would be the only one who could get through Peggy’s stubbornness and provide guidance that Peggy would listen to. We would also like to thank the staff of the Victoria Home Care program for their visits, conversations, and care when Peg was sick at home. A special mention and thanks to Lorraine Rideout her room mate in the hospital, who comforted her and made her laugh in her last days.
Peggy was a humble, generous, caring, and quick-witted spirit who will be deeply missed by all who crossed her path. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
The funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter’s Church, Ingonish Beach, on Friday, July 7, at 2:00 pm, with Fr. Jonas Uwaezuoke officiating. There will be a brief visitation at the church beginning at 1:00 pm. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.fillmoreandwhitman.com. Please make donations in Peg’s honour to the St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery Fund and Building Fund.
May you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows your dead!
