Born February 2, 1938 in Vancouver, daughter of Phillip and Patricia Sloane. She was predeceased by grandson Ashton MacDonald (33). Shirley is survived by her husband Robert of 64 years, children Sandra MacDonald, Robert Douglas Greer (Lorna), Thomas Glen Greer (Anabela), grandchildren John Fouchard, Allister MacDonald, Robert J Greer (Julianna), Katrina Greer, Sarah Greer, Rebecca Greer, Samantha Greer.
Ann – as she preferred to be called – was the daughter of an Army Officer and in 1958 she joined the RCAF. She trained as a police woman and was posted to CFB Bagotville QC where she met what she amusingly referred to as her “fighter pilot.” They were married in London, ON August 1, 1959 and remained married for 64 years until she died.
During her early years, Ann was skillful in sports including rollerblading, ice skating, figure skating and rifle shooting. Later, with travel and raising family, Ann had little opportunity to pursue her sport.
She spent much time with her children and grandchildren playing games, singing with them, and teaching them. When her three children reached teen age Ann resumed her education - graduating from Algonquin College in Ottawa in 1973 and immediately assumed a career with Quicklaw Computer Services. She excelled.
In 1980 both Ann and Robert retired from their careers to the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton. They literally built a home and assumed a new life. She became a member of the Presbyterian Church in North River, NS.
Finally, Ann and Robert left the Cabot Trail and moved to North Sydney, NS, rented an apartment and lived there for the rest of her life.
Ann became our family matriarch and helped instill in her grandchildren a sense of responsibility, love of family, a sense of humour, a love of music and a work ethic. She shared her wisdom, her love, her stories and her time with family, friends and animals. In turn they loved her.
Visitation for Ann will take place at St Andrews’s Presbyterian Church in North River, NS Sunday September 10 at 1:00 pm followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm with Rev. Corey Stewart officiating – reception to follow. Interment will take place at 4:00 pm that afternoon at Pine Hill Cemetery, River Bennett, NS.
