Following a well lived, long and fulfilling life, Abraham Doucette peacefully passed away at his home in Eskasoni, while surrounded by the love of his family on Wednesday, July 7, 2021. Born on May 24, 1928 to Abraham Sr. and Mary Madeline Doucette - Julian (nee Bernard). Abraham enjoyed the love and joy of being part of a large family. He overcame many things during his life, being a residential school survivor and also a Canadian Military Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict as a Section Leader and Machine Gunner for the Canadian Princes Patricia Light Infantry. It was his faith that kept him going. He was a longtime member of Holy Family Parish in Eskasoni and enjoyed the annual pilgrimage to Sainte Anne de Beaupre. Abraham also participated as a Sainte Anne carrier for many years during the annual gathering on Chapel Island.
Abraham was a hard worker and enjoyed sports (both playing and watching), fishing, woodworking and bingo. In 2003-2004 Abraham and his then wife Sarah were presented with Role Model of the Year by ABMHS.
He was predeceased by his mother Mary Madeline Doucette/Julian (nee Bernard), father Abraham Sr, step father Noel Thomas Julian, sisters Caroline Doucette, Margaret ‘Peggy’ Julian and Martha and Edith Julian (both in infancy), brothers John Joseph, Tuma Noel and Gilbert Julian as well as Henry Doucette and Victor Julian who both died in infancy. Abraham was also predeceased by his first wife Anna Jean (nee Johnson), his 2nd wife Mary (nee Dennis) and his 3rd wife Sarah Mae (nee Sylliboy), children John Duncan, Norman Abram, Keith Raymond and Pamela Ann Doucette, Charlie, Cora, Marlene and Frances Dennis, Reggie, Catherine Jean and Bernadette Sylliboy as well as his god parents Sarah Doucette/Wood and Albert Doucette.
He is survived by his children: Terry (Anna) Paul, Vernon (late Norma) Doucette, Iris (Raymond) Doucette, Gail (Darren) Stevens and Lawrence Doucette. His step children George (Ginger) Dennis, Noel (Kathy) Dennis, James (Debbie) Dennis, Gerald (Helen) Dennis, Steven (Florence) Dennis, Annette (Bertram) Bernard, Veronica Dennis, Cecilia (late Edwin) Kabaty and Jean (Frank) Googoo. His step children Thomas (Frances) Sylliboy, Steven Sylliboy, Germaine (PJ) Doucette, Julia (Mike) Gale, Juanita (Johnny) Sylliboy, Elaine Sylliboy, Jacqueline Sylliboy, Marla Sylliboy, Kathleen Sylliboy, Keegan Sylliboy and Gabriella Sylliboy. He leaves behind his brothers Steven Joseph (Mary Rebecca Julian), Edward and Vincent Julian, god children Karen Johnson, Sheila Johnson, Lynn Gould, and Alice Herney as well as daughters in law Helen Dennis and Vera Sylliboy, son in law Allan Linkletter. His dear friends Stanley Johnson Sr. and Sma’knis Al Oakley as well as his constant companion and four legged friend ‘Puppy’.
A visitation for Abraham will be held at the Gabriel Center starting at 7pm on Thursday, July 15. A family Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 17 at 2pm at Holy Family Church, Eskasoni with Fr. Antolin Asor and deacon Thomas Sylliboy officiating ministers.
