She was like the cool summer breeze, so refreshing with an infectious spirit. Like the wind, she was always on the go and touched every soul in her journey. She will be dearly missed but as she would often say, “It is, what it is,” and “Kejitu’n eta.”
On Monday September 12, 2022 our Angie Sa’n went to the spirit world at the prime of her life at age 41. Angie Sharona Ann Stevens was born September 3, 1981 in Sydney to Arlene and Benedict Spencer Stevens. She grew up in Eskasoni and raised two beautiful children, Jasmine and Bradley (B2).
Angie was considered the next generation of Mi’kmaq language warriors and her passion was in preserving and restoring the Mi’kmaq language. Angie worked at the Eskasoni Market and Ta’n L’nuey Etl-Mawlukwatmumk (TLE). She had a strong work ethic and always had a job on the side, even up till present day. She returned to school in 2009 and received her Bachelor of Arts in 2012 and completed her Bachelor of Education in 2014. She immediately started working as a Mi’kmaq Immersion primary teacher with Eskasoni School Board in 2014 till present day.
Angie loved teaching and loved all her students. Her passion for teaching the Mi’kmaq language resonated in her career. She took on many language revitalisation and translation projects and worked with numerous organization which included, Eskasoni Immersion for curriculum development, Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey, IWK, Department of Education, Nova Scotia Mental Health and she was working all summer with Conne River First Nation, Newfoundland on Mi’kmaq Language curriculum development.
Angie’s passion for continued education took her to Saint Francis Xavier University where she completed her Master of Education in 2020. In Angie’s final year at St.FX she received the Sister Dorothy Moore Education Scholarship in which she was extremely proud of.
The community of Eskasoni and Mi’kmaq Nation and beyond were shocked by the sudden passing of Angie. Her social life was like the wind. She fit in everywhere and was adored by those she touched.
Angie loved her close friends and loved her children and family. Angie was preceded in death by her father, Benedict Spencer Stevens, grandparents Peter and Mary Paul, Benedict and Margaret Stevens and cousin and close friend Melissa Paul. She is survived by mother Arlene Stevens, siblings, Scott and Alexis Stevens, children Jasmine and Bradley II, godparents Jackie Paul and Ann Denny, nieces, Hanna, Taylor, Annyss, Rhanna and Ada, nephews, Paul, Arlen, Scott, great niece Oaklyn, numerous Uncles and Aunts and godchildren, Taylor, Rylee, Arytan, Wolfgang, and Vera and in laws Ralph and Belinda Stevens.
Angie’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Eskasoni Paramedics, Doctor’s and nurses at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Belinda Stevens and to all those who came to support and comfort Angie’s family. You will forever be in our hearts.
Visitation will take place at Gabriel Center at 50 Gabriel Street, starting Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 7pm. Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 19, 2022 at 10:30 am at Eskasoni Holy Family Parish with Fr. Antolin Asor officiating. Interment to follow in Holy Family Parish Cemetery.
