Arlene 'Dozay' Christmas

October 31, 1954November 21, 2019

Arlene (Dozay) Christmas October 31, 1954 – November 21, 2019

Dozay was truly a one-of-a-kind person. She loved the Created World and all that belonged to it. She loved its trees, its plants, its medicines and its four legged ones, its winged ones (especially its eagles and its red tailed hawks) and the ones that lived in its waters. Dozay took so much joy in drawing and painting their likenesses.

Dozay loved all peoples especially her own people, the Wolastoqiyik (or the Maliseet) from Neqotkuk (or Tobique First Nation) in New Brunswick and her adopted people, the Mi’kmaq from Unama’ki (Cape Breton). She loved illustrating their stories in books, paintings and murals and her works can be seen in many, many places. She took special joy in telling the stories about Kluskap (or Glooscap) – a project that she continued until the time she left us.

More than anything, Dozay loved our family, especially our children, and her legacy of love will always stay with us. Her legacy will continue with her husband of 37 years, Dan; her dear children – Peter, Lacey and Gail; and her two precious grandchildren, Rawlin and Arya, whom she loved with all her heart; her brother, Gerald or Nanan Nicholas and her four sisters – Gloria or Floogie Nicholas, Annie Nicholas, Connie or Bodin Nicholas and Dawn Rose Bear and her numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and her special aunt, Henrietta Black. She was so proud that her nephew, Jean Michael Jacobson, joined her in her artistic projects during her last few years.

Dozay was always so grateful for the love and the support of her husband’s family in Membertou – Dan’s mother, Viola Christmas, Dan’s sisters - Delores Francis, Jane Bernard, Dorothy Daix and Donna Christmas and their many children and grandchildren as well as Dan’s aunt Mary Anne Gallahar.

Dozay was predeceased by her father and her mother, Peter and Jeanette Nicholas and her three brothers - Leonard, Terry and Charles or Diamond Nicholas.

Please join us in celebrating Dozay’s life and legacy. The wake will begin at 7:00 pm, Sunday (November 24) at her home and gallery at 71 Tupsi Drive, Membertou. The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday (November 26) at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, in Sydney. The salite and meal will follow after the funeral at the Membertou Trade and Convention Center. Burial will be held at another date. My condolences to all of Dozay's family. I know she will be missed.

I had only begun to get to know Dozay — through her art — in the past few months. It is wonderful that her murals will be a part of the legacy she leaves behind. It is through her art that both the family & the public will remember her, for those things that are of this world will remain as the spirit moves on.
